About this piece
Quoted in "The Flax" is an adaptation of a nursery rhyme often used by Danish tellers of folktales to end their stories: "Snip Snap Snude/Nu Eventyret ude" (Snip snap snude, now the tale is over). Andersen employs the nursery rhyme as it is recited in a game of cards called "Korente Margrete," in which the first player says "snip" as he plays his card, after which the others in turn finish out the rhyme by saying "snap" and "snurre." "Basselure" is said as the player who wins plays his last card.
